Grandma's Orange Cookies
As a child, nearly every time we drove by the Tropicana canning plant in town my dad would talk about the smell of grandma’s orange cookies on Christmas. These are grandma’s orange cookies, Crisco and all. Ingredients:                                                     Frosting: 1 cup Crisco                                                    3 Tbsp + 1 tsp orange juice 2 cups sugar              ...

Hot Cocoa Cookies
As promised, I made the hot cocoa cookies I posted a few weeks back from the recipe below. http://www.pipandebby.com/pip-ebby/2011/11/14/hot-cocoa-cookies.html I skipped the shaved chocolate topping, but I don’t think I missed anything. Best when served warm to keep the center soft. Would also make for a great basic chocolate cookie.

Abbott Laboratories Vitamin PSAs circa 1950
In 2006 at the Gainesville, FL ‘friends of the library’ book sale I found this collection of vitamin related public service announcements put out by Abbott Laboratories in the late 1940s & early 1950s. In the vein of vintage food, I thought I’d share the photos.

Madras Mix Up
I found this base recipe in a backpacker magazine years ago. Quick and delicious, you can control the heat by adding more or less yogurt and/or tomato paste. Reheats very well. Ingredients: 8 oz greek yogurt                                            1/2 cup yellow raisins 4 oz tomato paste                                            1 cup chopped carrots 1 15 oz can garbanzo...

Moroccan Vegetable Stew
My grad school roommate, Amber, taught me this one when we were preparing food for our ‘around the world’ themed graduation party. Simple and delicious with a great smokey flavor.  Ingredients: 8 cups water                                                        1 cup frozen cut okra 2 tsp turmeric                                                     1 cup fresh spinach, chopped ...
